WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY

Chemistry Building

The College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University relocated chemistry teaching laboratories, classrooms and related support spaces into a new state-of-the-art facility. It meets current academic laboratory standards, teaching practices and environmental health and safety requirements.

The new chemistry building is an 83,000 square foot, four story, $22 million facility. It is connected to Wood Hall via a bridge and the Dalton Center via a service tunnel. The site and building design preserves open spaces enhancing the existing pedestrian circulation on campus.

“Because the facility is so mechanically intensive, with exhaust and other systems, a building like this would normally take 24 months to complete. For the new building, the work will have been completed in 15 months,” David Dakin, Director of Campus Planning, Architecture and Design for Western Michigan University.

Construction services were provided by Miller Davis under a Construction Manager/Constructor form of project delivery. Holabird + Root, Chicago, Illinois supplied Architectural/Engineering services.
