CITY OF KALAMAZOO
Eckert Wordell’s design approach to the Community Stage in downtown Kalamazoo’s Bronson Park embraces the surrounding historic structures and sculptures while making an architectural statement for modern times.
Many of the park’s and vicinity’s influences are reflected in the design and construction. The acoustical walls are composed of limestone prevalent in surrounding buildings. The roof form derives from the arches of surrounding churches, while the roofing material matches the copper of the Civic Theater. The Bronson Park fountain’s forms are reflected in the tower supporting the roof, while the bronze cast Rotary Club logo anchors the tower. The stage has become an active but not overwhelming participant in the park’s landscape.
Miller Davis completed the 1800-square-foot stage in 1999 through a General Contract with the Kalamazoo Rotary Club. The project won both AIA Michigan and AIA Southwest Michigan Honor Awards.
